Living in Aalen, Germany, Lai Poh Choo found herself navigating a new culture and language while nurturing her passion for the arts. Through patience and perseverance, she built a bridge between her heritage and her present. Her journey shows that even quiet steps taken today shape beautiful tomorrows.
I’m currently working as a patent analyst in southern Germany. Fifteen years ago, I took my first drawing class at a local community college (Volkshochschule). Since then, drawing and painting have become an essential part of my life.
The majority of my colleagues at work are German, and I hardly ever meet any Singaporeans in my workplace or neighborhood. However, I’m glad there’s a Singaporean community in the Stuttgart area, about 80 km from my town, Aalen. Gatherings are held during festive seasons.
In 2022, I conceptualized and organized a collaborative art project in conjunction with National Day celebrations, involving fellow Singaporeans in Stuttgart. This later inspired me to set up "Painter Sisters", a private group consisting of a few lady friends from Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. We meet regularly for creative gatherings to paint, chat, and enjoy makan (eating) together.

As a child, I was always passionate about drawing and painting. However, like many Singaporeans of my generation, I was discouraged from pursuing a creative career due to the financial insecurity.
The demands of study and work left me with little time for drawing. Turning 40 prompted me to reflect deeply, and I decided to pursue the things I had always dreamed of doing.
So, I signed up for my first drawing class and embarked on an incredible journey that has helped me find harmony between life, work, and creativity.
To date, I’ve explored pencil drawing, colored pencil drawing, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, portraits, and Zentangle. I’m also considering pursuing a diploma in botanical art when I retire from work.
