Settling in Washington, USA, Flora Tay faced the challenges of adapting to a new environment while staying true to herself. Her love for baking helped to bridge this gap, finding joy in making sweet treats. Flora’s journey affirms that there is no correct or perfect way to display her passion – so long you are taking the steps to pursue it, you will eventually find your calling.

Staying Rooted Through Baking, Community, and Connection Abroad

I am currently residing in Washington, USA, and I enjoy creating bakes with cute designs.

My husband works in the U.S. Living abroad has made me realize that life is constantly filled with changes.

Frequent chats with family and friends back in Singapore, as well as hanging out with fellow Singaporeans living in the area, help me stay connected to Singapore.

These connections have made me appreciate the great diversity of people and their experiences.

Finding Joy Through Baking and Sharing from the Heart

Missing my mum’s baked goods and boredom led me to take the first step into the world of baking. I then realized I enjoy the process of baking, and I find joy and satisfaction when people relish my bakes.

Courage:

My friend asked if I could bake a birthday cake for her daughter’s birthday. I was flattered, excited, and extremely nervous. It was the first time someone asked me to bake for a special occasion! I didn’t want to disappoint my friend and her daughter—this kept me going.

Resilience:

Failed bakes!! Bakes that don’t look or taste like what I envisaged can be maddening and disappointing, but I realize there is no perfect bake.

Adaptability:

I take a deep breath and reflect on what I could have done differently. I try again if I can; otherwise, I learn from the experience and move on.

Joy:

Knowing people relish my bakes brings me the most joy and satisfaction.
